4 out of 5 stars Great for those of us with uncomplicated finances   September 1, 2010
Merin (OK)
And I use "uncomplicated" loosely. At last count, I have 21 accounts that I track in Quicken, including four checking accounts, three savings accounts, ten credit cards, and four car loans. (Hey, don't judge. Some of those are store cards with $0 balance. ;)

I was upgrading from the 2004 "New User Edition" (probably that year's equivalent of Basic). I was satisfied with my old version, but had to bite the bullet and upgrade because I wanted to load it to my laptop. (Previous one came pre-installed on the desktop - no disk.) It worked perfectly. I simply created a copy of the file on my old computer, transferred that file to the new computer, and pointed Quicken to it when I was setting it up.

The hitches I had were relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, but frustrating enough to prevent me from giving it five stars.

- One of my checking accounts has an overdraft "line of credit", and I use it extensively for convenience and the LOW interest rate. Thus, at the time I was setting the accounts up, I had a negative balance. While configuring the online settings, I indicated that it was a "checking" account that "already exists." But due to the negative balance, Quicken stubbornly insisted it was a CC and only offered those accounts to choose from. It took several frustrating minutes for it to occur to me that this might be the problem. Finally I logged in and transferred funds from savings to bring the balance above $0, and the next attempt worked perfectly.

- The first download resulted in about three months' worth of transactions being downloaded. I never could locate an option to customize the download time frame. And the first time I did it, I didn't know it wouldn't prompt me to match the transactions. Thus, three months' worth of transactions in my busiest account got duplicated in the register. Deleting them was, needless to say, a huge PITA. (If this happens to you, know that it's much faster to delete transactions from the Reconcile screen.) Once I got that straightened out, I found the option to disable the automatic load (it's Edit > Preferences > Downloaded transactions, UNCHECK the box for "Automatically add..."). The result is that after synching up your accounts, a flag will appear next to the ones with new transactions. A list will appear at the bottom of the screen when you view each account, and it will make an effort to match them to transactions that already exist. Be warned, though, the first time you do this with an existing account it will be a pain. Any transaction that has already been reconciled in the register will appear as "new" in the download list. You can manually match them, but it's tedious. You can also delete them, but I wasn't sure what effect (if any) that would have the next time I downloaded and so I chose to manually match them.

- I've been stuck in an endless loop trying to sync up another checking account. When I go in through the program, I get continuous password errors (even though I am 100% positive I am using the correct password). And when I try to download manually from my bank's website, absolutely nothing happens. I have yet to figure out whether the problem lies with Quicken or my bank, although I'm inclined to believe it's my bank.

- I can't find the option to add the Reconcile button to the toolbar - it seems to only be accessible under Account Actions. I know, I'm picky, but having such a basic and common function require two clicks instead of one is already grating on me. I'm sure I'll get used to it, though.

So that's my experience so far. Minor, one-time inconveniences...not at all uncommon with any software upgrade. For the money, you can't beat this program. I've only had it a couple hours and I already LOVE the one-click download from all your accounts...this will save me a TON of time.

1 out of 5 stars Will not let me import anything!   August 30, 2010

I purchased this given that I had previously used other versions of Quicken. However, I cannot comment on the money management of the program itself. The fact that Quicken refuses to use what they call 'Obsolete' formats - But, in reality this translates as 'formats which don't involve money going to Quicken', meant that I could not import any data. And I am not buying a piece of software so I can type in each transaction manually for the last 2 years! I nearly got the deluexe, I am so glad I did not.

Save yourself alot of money, time, hassle and stress with a simple pen and paper. Much more useful than this waste of space. I wish there was a 0 star rating.

Avoid.

5 out of 5 stars I don't miss MS Money at all   August 29, 2010
Steve Jahnke (Cary, IL United States)
I was a user of MS Money for years until MS decided not to continue the product with Windows 7. Quicken does all that Money did and then some. Download was painless, would prefer to have a disc but additional future downloads are possible. Well worth the price

3 out of 5 stars Basic software   August 26, 2010
T. Ellerbrock (Houston, Tx)
I needed to upgrade from Quicken 2007 because my bank updates stopped working. So, I held a chat session w/ Quicken customer service. They verified that the Starter Edition 2010 was the equivalent version (function) of Basic 2007. So, I downloaded the software from Amazon. During the import process, it did say that my previous version was incompatible, but the CS rep said that it would import just fine. And it did. When I started using the software, I immediately noticed that ALL of the investment functions that were there in Basic 2007 were inactive. The buttons were there, but they did nothing when clicked. Evidently, anything having to do with investments is not available until you upgrade to the Deluxe version. The only thing I can do is show a cash deposit to my investment accounts, but Quicken will now not let me enter market prices to calculate market value, ROI, etc. This is not critical for me, but sure was nice to have in Basic 2007 without having to pay extra. The overall Starter 2010 functionality (checking, savings, credit card) is still very good. I just wish I had purchased the actual software in the box rather than download it because there are no returns on downloads. I might have actually returned the Starter software and shopped around a bit more for a cheap Deluxe version.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic finance software   August 26, 2010
Spectral Warrior (Portland, OR United States)
This is a good, basic financial software product. I bought it to replace an old version of Microsoft Money. Transferring data from Money to Quicken took several attempts as Quicken had difficulty recognizing categories, distinguishing between categories and account transfers and misidentified account types. It probably would have been easier and less frustrating to just start from scratch. Downloading bank transactions appears to work fine, but I'm not convinced Quicken picks up and clears ALL transactions - there are a few that it seems to have missed. I also don't understand why it wants to register the software online at Intuit every time I connect with the bank; it did this when it was installed and I would think once was enough.
