5 out of 5 stars The #1 Anti-Virus Software   April 3, 2008

The 'User's Guide' says this version 6.0 is for Windows 98/ 95/NT. The Windows 3.1/DOS software is version 4.0. The package contains a CD-ROM with a boot diskette for emergency. Hopefully, you'll never need to use it. It is helpful on any computer that seems to have a problem. Chapter 1 explains how to install the NAV software: insert the CD in the drive, click on the 'Install' option and follow the instructions. They recommend using the 'LiveUpdate' option for updating your virus protection. To uninstall, select the 'Add/Remove Programs' from the Control Panel. Chapter 2 describes the new features in this version. You should create Rescue Disks in case of any emergency.

Chapter 3 explains the basics. The 'System Status' provides a overall summary. Next it explains how to create rescue disks on floppies or a ZIP disk, and how to update these disks. Chapter 4 tells how to respond to NAV alerts, and shows the types of alerts. You can get a virus from disks, a local network, of the Internet. They do malicious damage to files, data, and can erase a hard drive. Others can steal personal information and send it to someone who will commit fraud. Using Auto-Protect at all times is most important. Be wary of all new software. Regularly update your virus protection. All floppy disks should be scanned before using! [Unless you format blank unformatted disks.]

Chapter 6 explains the procedures to follow when you find a virus. The "Virus in Memory" requires you to turn off the computer and run the Rescue Boot Disk. If the file can't be repaired they explain what to do (pp.40-41). It is very important to keep your Rescue Disk up-to-date to replace infected system files (pp.41-43). Chapter 7 covers the most frequent problems that you may experience. When Windows starts in "safe mode" the Norton Auto-Protect does not run. Unusual situations are explained (p.48). Appendix A tells how to install NAV on Windows 3.1 and DOS: run \NAVDOSWN\SETUP.EXE from the CD.

The earlier version told how to install NAV for DOS only. Run \NAVDOSWN\INSTALL.EXE from the CD. To uninstall from DOS remove the \NAV references from AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS, then delete the directory with the NAV programs. If you want to turn off Auto-Protect in DOS type NAVTSR /U on the command line.
