Amazon.com Review Microsoft Access 97 Bible has proven so popular that IDG has re-released it as Microsoft Access 97 Bible, Gold Edition. The updated edition features new material, plus a hard cover that ought to extend the life of the book if it's often borrowed from the desks of office managers and systems teams. Microsoft Access 97 Bible, Gold Edition, explains everything there is to know about using Microsoft Access 97, which is quite a lot. Authors Cary N. Prague and Michael R. Irwin begin with the software installation process and work their way through all the features important to people who create and use relational databases with Access. Since the greater part of the text is modeled around case studies (the case study files are on the companion CD-ROM), the process of learning about new features has a distinctly practical feel, even when the book gets into programming for Access with Visual Basic for Applications. As the authors guide you through the capabilities of Access, they cover tables, forms, queries, reports, joins, and the various ways of giving the data a pleasing appearance. They also address external data sources, macro programming, and the specific procedures involved in making labels and form letters. If you're a small business owner who'd rather spend some time developing new skills than hiring a consultant, you can use this book to help you create custom database tools for your company. --David Wall

Carelessly designed and written May 27, 2004 I must preface this short review with the confession that I am using this book without the CD. In any case, the material is laid out in a very haphazard way and does not build up the example in stages. In addition, I have noticed that a number of the components in the example are actually incorrect! There is a general sense that the authors put no time into planning or proofreading and rushed the entire book. In some areas the explanations are so bad that they lay the onus on the reader to derive the conclusions, where the conclusions should be made clear by the authors.
Errors in the text and unclear definitions March 3, 2002 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I am using this book as the text for an internet class on Access and am very disappointed in the clarity and quality of the book. The database names on the CD do not correspond the text. Explanations of concepts, for example the different types of relationships, I found to be more clearly defined in the Microsoft manuals that come with Access. There are places where the text refers to an example that does not correspond to the text (e.g. pointing out that an option must be selected and it is not checked in the example). There must be a better written book!!!
This is supposed to be a reference? February 8, 2002 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I suppose if you've never seen Access before, this could be a good book to enable you to build very simple databases. As a reference I find it atrocious. I probably should have found something that wasn't a "for Dummies" style book.
Worthy of the name "Bible"! September 15, 2001 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book that is very easy to read & understand. The autor even offers a website for additional info!
Excellent book for beginners and refreshers May 17, 2001 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I purchased this book and found it very useful and practical. It didn't scare me with a lot of cryptic terminology and charts. And it didn't lose me in a sea of mind-boggling technical jargon I was not familiar with. It stepped through the building process comprehensively, for the most. There were a few glitches on the CD, and in some parts some of the exercises didn't seem to work or produced an error message. But overall, it was a good, comprehensive book. Not for computer gurus, definitely, but for someone needing the basics or looking to refresh, it is very useful. I had tried some of the Idiot's books on Access as well as a much more expensive copy from Microsoft Press. The Idiot's books tended to insult my intelligence, while the Microsoft Press book found me snoring on my keyboard. This one kept me awake and informed.
