Marketing brilliance was at work when someone at Adobe conceived of the "Elements" product line. The full-bore Photoshop and Premiere applications are incredibly powerful - and bewilderingly complex. Adobe pretty much dominated the still image manipulation arena with Photoshop, while having some stiff competition to Premiere in the video market. True to its tradition, Adobe charged an arm and a leg for both products.

But Adobe was being eaten alive by many other publishers in the burgeoning lower-end market for image manipulation and video editing programs.

So they struck back with the Elements line.

Adobe and other say these programs deliver 80 - 90% of the functionality of their big brothers.

Both Photoshop and Premiere Elements are more than capable for every day hobbyist level work and I use them in preference to the full packages, which I also own. In fact, I have been wondering why I have them.

The learning curve on Photoshop and Premiere Elements is still pretty steep compared to other programs, but that is the price of progress.

Version 8 is much more stable than earlier versions. I am running the programs on a 2.5 Ghz Intel Duo Core with a lower than middle-of-the-road graphics adaptor without any major problems.

Photoshop Elements will handle just about any except the most demanding tasks. The same is true of Premiere.

Yes, you will need to invest in some learning aids to help you along. The Help files for the programs won't cut it for most people - and the User Interface is not terribly intuitive. To get the full power from Photoshop, you are going to have to learn how to use layers - and that is a complex subject. Once you learn how to use them, Photoshop Elements is a powerhouse.

Premiere is not as simple to use as some of the lower-cost programs on the market, but it is capable of doing most everyday tasks a hobbyist videomaker will encounter.

Overall, Adobe Photoshop & Premiere Elements 8 is a reasonably priced and very capable solution to your still image and video editing needs.

I was not impressed but you get what you pay for. I went back to an old CS4 photo shop I had so just wasted my money thinking I could get some new technology cheap.

I had been using Elements 5 with a catalog of about 25,000 photos for over three years. Version 8 was installed on an HP Pavilion dv7 (dual core, 2.5 GHz, 4 MB RAM) running Windows 7. Many of the bugs in version 8 have been detailed in other reviews. These bugs pose significant performance issues. While I found no significant issues with Elements (photo editor), problems with Organizer (catalog system) & Premiere (video editor) made the software unusable. I've gone back to using version 5.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 & Adobe Premiere Elements is ideal for anyone who doesn't shoot and edit photos and videos for a living. Adobe's packaged the perfect balance of features and functionality for both worlds: photos and videos for the home user.

I don't come close to taking full advantage of everything both programs can do, but I am learning more all of the time thanks to Adobe's forums ([...]).

I use Premiere Elements to create movie-like videos of friends and family. I've learned how to add soundtracks, titles, scene transitions -- even special effects and closing credits. And it is fun to learn as you go. Who knows, perhaps a visit to Sundance someday? :-)

For photos, I'm learning how to use Photoshop Elements to do much more than "get the red" out of eyes and sharpen images -- lately I've been learning how to create fun "National Inquirer" photos (putting a friend's head on someone standing next to a celebrity, for example). I'm even starting to add photos into some of my videos.

I also created my own Christmas & birthday cards. The online storage (you can't replace these memories if they were to get lost) makes it easy to share, plus ensures they'll last forever.

I'm having a blast, impressing friends and family, and capturing snapshots of our lives that will last forever. Thanks Adobe!

Adobe has done it again! They took an already fantastic product and improved it. I have been using Photoshop and Premier Elements since it's inception and have loved it right from the beginning. The programs are very user friendly and at the same time very powerful. Each time Adobe comes out with a new verision I am right there to purchase it, always knowing that there is absolutely no doubt it is going to be better than the last one. It is hard now a days to find a such a high quality product at such a reasonable price.
