Outdated information useless - cd is corrupted July 9, 2008 The book is outdated. The latest version of Ubuntu (8) can not be learned using this book. I decided to switch to the version included with the book to prevent a total loss, but the CD files were corrupt and would not load. Book is useless. CD doesn't work. Save your money and don't buy.

This provides a great beginning overview to Ubuntu Linux and had some very interesting history about it. Switching from Microsoft to Linux, this book carefully explained the similarities and differences. Because Ubuntu is very intuitive, some of the book's sections were simplistic, but thorough in the explanation. Overall, a very good starting point in learning the new OS.
Ubuntu Linux April 4, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The book is for an outdated verison of Ubuntu. This book is for V6 and current version is V7. Still, much is the same.

They got the title wronge, it is ubuntu by dummies. I bought this book to understand how to install ubuntu. This is the most important thing. if this goes wrong your computer is trash. They put in a few paragraphs on this subjech; my computer is trash. I was also interested in a simple explanation of the linux language. all they talk about is gnome.
Good Information February 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My only complaint is that I am using an IMAC and nowhere on the front cover of the book or any where else could I find any thing that said the book was for "Ubuntu Linux" for PCs. I was hoping to use the enclosed software CD, but alas, it wouldn't run on my IMAC. However, probably 95% of the information is also good for IMAC users so I didn't loose every thing when I bought the book. It has helped me out of several tight spots.
