As preposterous action movies go, Jumper is pleasantly unpretentious and breezily entertaining. A young man named David (Hayden Christensen) discovers he has the power to teleport (or "jump") anywhere he can visualize. After using this power to steal and make a comfortable life for himself, he pursues the girl he longed for in school (Rachel Bilson, The O. C.). But as he does so, another jumper (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot) and a pack of fanatical jumper-hunters called paladins (led by a white-haired Samuel L. Jackson) crashes into David's freewheeling life. Jumper wastes no time trying to explain how jumping works or delving into the hows and whys of the paladins; this is an alluring fantasy of power directed at a pell-mell pace by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Go). There's a brief moment when it feels like the movie will bog down in romance and vague gestures towards character development--happily, that's the moment when Bell appears and the whole movie shifts into overdrive. You might wish that Bell and Christensen had swapped roles; Bell has a far more engaging personality, and Christensen's bland good looks might better suit a more aggressive character. Nonetheless, Jumper has oodles of dynamism and nifty visual effects to propel its comic-book storyline forward. A variety of recognizable actors in bit parts (such as Diane Lane and Kristen Stewart, Panic Room) suggest that the filmmakers are laying the groundwork for sequels. Based on a critically-acclaimed science-fiction novel by Steven Gould. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Suspenseful   November 8, 2008

Although I didn't care for this movie, my niece loved it and wanted it as a birthday gift. She likes Hayden Christensen and suspenseful movies, so this was a perfect selection for her. The movie had action and lots of teleportation, but highly believable, it is not.

The product is not as advertised. It is shown as having DTS sound quality but is in fact 5.1 Dolby Digital.

5 out of 5 stars pure entertainment   October 20, 2008

I bought this expecting entertainment, and it delivered it 100%.
I don't think it was pretending to be anything else.
I gave 5 stars for being better than the reviews here suggested, and it is a film I would watch several times over - just good light-hearted entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi fans - This is worth seeing   October 19, 2008

Perhaps this doesn't rank among my absolute favorites or what I consider "the greats" of sci-fi/fantasy, but it's up there as a movie I own and will watch several times. It's a fun fantasy - imagine being able to "jump" anywhere as the main character can from one place to the other in an instant! The main character, an immature, abused and damaged kid finds he can do this. Imagine all of the challenges that may occur and you've got this movie.

It kept my attention and I was entertained. The character development and back stories could have been a bit more developed, but it was effective enough for me to care about what happens to Hayden Christensen's troubled character, and to enjoy the fantasy element. There was also enough action with some good special effects to keep my attention.

Cutting to the chase, if you're a sci-fi or fantasy fan, you're going to want to see this. If you're a fan of Hayden Christensen or Samuel Jackson you'll absolutely want to see this.

3 out of 5 stars The first of three planned movies   October 18, 2008

Running David (Max Thieriot) loves little Millie (AnnaSophia Robb) with a love that couldn't die. He couldn't swim the raging river; but he leaned how to jump. What would you do if you found the ability to transport? Yep the first plan was to exacta all not nasty old paper in the local bank. Where do we go from here? For one thing it irks some people including fanatic "jumper hunter" Roland (Samuel L. Jackson.) We find new friends and enemies no known in the book. Then we have David's nagging question "Who/what is mommy?

Inspired by the jumper character in the youth novels of Steven Gould the movie tried to rely more on the real world locations than graphics. They did a good job on jumper graphics. The names have not been changed just the story. In an effort not to follow the standard supper hero formula they instead relied on the Sunday afternoon T.V. children's specials formula.

The film is entertaining but the efforts to be artsy or the efforts be unique are lost in the mundane and standard chase scenes.
