| Customer Reviews: The definitive guide to Perl February 23, 2010 Leslie (Reno, NV) I came to this set knowing next to nothing about Perl. These materials gave me a very good introduction to Perl. I was amazed - this is a very complete package. I thought this set was very good for a beginner like me breaking it down to common sense. And I managed to ramp myself up on Perl and start writing some sweet scripts within a week. Anyhow, in summary, I would strongly recommend this Perl programming set to beginners, or people who want to brush up on their Perl (especially if they learned it elsewhere). Definitely two thumbs up!
A must have for beginners December 17, 2009 Valdo Miller (Annandale, NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this to be an excellent introduction to Perl. I bought it because I became responsible for a testing facility written in Perl. I'm not a professional programmer, but I have some experience using Unix and C/C++. Textbooks are filled with great examples by very experienced authors, which will not only show you how to do that exact thing you want to, but also point you to the Perl ways of solving problems. In a month or two Perl will likely become my favorite scripting language.
Essential reference December 14, 2009 Karine Fortland (Winter Park, CO) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have already programmed Perl for years, but decided to spend a few days' free time and learned a few things that I neglected before. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in systems administration or web development. Even if you only plan to write Perl for your own purposes, recreational or otherwise, this is the perfect beginner's tool. Invaluable texts offer quick and varied solutions to the most common perl tasks. I like the variety of solutions; generally the first one they suggest is the one of the ideas you'll have had for solving the problem; then they refine it into most robust, idiomatic perl, which means you have the option of learning how the pros do it. It is an excellent reference work and a great tutorial on Perl.
Nice, inexpensive and very practical December 10, 2009 Alex Vox (Winnetka, IL) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
It is not my first programming training, (I took C/C++ and Java trainings from the same series), and I decided to take on Perl, as it is widely quoted and scripts are everywhere. I am not a professional programmer, itis more like a hobby for me. I love technology and spend some of my free time by learning some new cool things. This training keeps my interest warm, presents plenty of new material and offers many niceties. If you take this one, you don't need anything else to learn Perl (and many other things about Linux). It presents some nice textbooks on Perl and it also includes a massive collection of well selected books on system subjects. I learned some Linux before, but when it comes to Perl, you start appreciating all the info you have in the included library. As you depart from its most basic lessons, you will see how Perl scripting works with other Linux components and here the library comes to a play.
This course is very practical, it gives you path-guide and all tools necessary, and you have to work through it. As with all programming languages learning, it takes substantial amount of patience and perseverance, but it is to be expected. I must say, that all the trainings I had from Unix Academy, are very straight forward and well selected. It is apparent that someone who is really knowledgeable put this thing together. I really didn't touch the second text book, as the first one, provided all that I was looking for. Again, as I'm not a professional programmer, I skipped on all the advanced stuff from a second volume.
Now I can do some Perl scripting and my understanding of shells is far greater than it was before. As all of Unix Academy trainings come with Linux installations, it gives you a good perspective and experience. It may be important if you learn for a job. If you are ready for some serious learning, this set will deliver. For a money, you can't do any better!
