Version 6 is great!! November 4, 2009 FairMinded (Chicago< IL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
With balancing so much work and extracurricular activities, it's sometimes challenging to keep it all running smoothly. Years ago, I learned the typical Daytimer / Franklin Covey planning systems for time management, and I've never forgotten those skills. But in this computer era, nothing has quite replaced the paper planner systems which allow you to create detailed "To Do" list, prioritizes each item and turn them into scheduled tasks in a manner that allows you to track item by the day and month that they will be completed. I use Microsoft Outlook to consolidate all of my email accounts, but the task list in Outlook just wasn't cutting it.
Enter Franklin Covey PlanPlus for Outlook (ver. 6). This software is an ADD-IN to Outlook. It installs a new layout on your Outlook screen that allows up to see your emails and calendar on the same screen (like Outlook does already), but adds areas to easily create, prioritize, schedule and track tasks - - even BY PROJECT. Any task can be turn into an appointment and placed on your calendar. It incorporates into the Outlook software in a way that even allows you to use the Outlook CATEGORY feature so that the appointments are colored coded on your calendar. You can even SYNC the application with most handhelds. I use a blackberry, but others handhelds will work as well. You can even drag and drop emails into the To Do list to create a task out of it, and rename it!
In only a few days, I've discovered how important this software is. I have always be pretty organized. But, this is taking it to another level. I can jot down thoughts, ideas and To Do(s) in a flash - - do a Quick Prioritize using the software, sync and have it all with me on the road. I can even add new tasks and projects on the road and have my handheld update the desktop software. You can even export tasks and projects goals to an Excel spreadsheet. All this for $99. I got it for $79 on sale.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Because complex planning systems like Microsoft Project do not cover all of your life and do not interface with your day to day software (email). To be successful in life, we have to balance / manage many activities. With PlanPlus, you will still use programs, such as MS Project, for the things that they do well. But, Planplus allows you two create, manage and track tasks across your entire life, in a friendly and easy to use format - - right from your email screen. For those of you who don't use Outlook, there is a Desktop version of PlanPlus as well that acts like a computer based organizer (not tied directly to email).
Remember: 90% of your success is in the planning (which requires solid task tracking). The more control you have over your life, the quicker (and higher the probability) that you will reach your goals!
Installed version 6, skipped 5 June 24, 2009 George Gamarra (San Francisco, CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I skipped version 5 and went straight to version 6 due to sketchy reviews. I am using it on a daily basis now. There is an extra 15-20 seconds of bootup time for WinXPpro/Outlook 2003 as FC loads on top of Outlook, but worth it given the additional functionality. I did have to do some installation and fine tuning steps. The only thing that doesn't work is the Wizards, but I am a seasoned FC organizer user, so you don't need those if you know the FC system. I would have rated this a 5 if this had been a clean install/setup but with the challenges it merits a 3. However, I decided on 4 due to the benefits I now have gained. Here are the challenges I encountered:
Problems Plan Plus for Outlook 6.0
Installation
Issue: Install was interrupted with a message that a Microsoft .NET component is missing called: Microsoft .NET Framework Client Profile.
Answer: Copied the name of the missing component and searched for missing component file in Microsoft Download center on www.microsoft.com, found it, downloaded and installed on PC by double clicking downloaded icon. Installation worked fine after this.
PlanPlus Pocket Informant
Issue: Could not see PlanPlus information on mobile device after installing Pocket Informant for Plan Plus from Plan Plus Installtion CD/File.
Answer: It was not clear that after installation you had to open Microsoft ActiveSync application on the PC while mobile device was connected, go to Tools Menu, select Options and check ON, PlanPlus Pocket Informant. Worked fine after this.
Threat Protection Conflict
Issue: Outlook 2003 was freezing randomly while using PlanPlus that is immediately followed by a message from McAfee software as follows: "McAfee Virus On-Access Scan Message, Message:Virus Scan Alert, Pathname: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE::GetProcAddress, Detected As: bo::heap, State: Blocked by Buffer Overflow Protection. The only way to recover is to close Outlook immediately from the taskbar or task manager. Also experienced problem printing monthly items in print menu.
Answer: Read on the web that the lastest McAfee versions needed to be installed as there have been issues with Buffer Overflow Protection giving false alerts. Problems were resolved when switched to Symantec as the preferred vendor and Symantec Endpoint Protection Version 11.04202.75 software replaced McAfee. (Web talk suggests to upgrade to latest version of McAfee).
Makes Outlook run very slow. March 8, 2009 B. Brown (Downey, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been using FC Software Products for years (since the Palm III), but each version continues to get worse, not better. I kept buying the latest update each year, hoping they had fixed the problems. My final issue was the Quick prioritze tasks were not the same as the task list. Technical support was no help. I finally removed it from my computer because it kept on crashing Outlook and I wasted more time trying to fix the time saver/organizer than the time it saved. It is very difficult to synchronized with my Treo 755. I will never buy another Franklin Covey software product again.
Version 5 Great - don't upgrade to Version 6 until at least 6.1 is available December 15, 2008 C. Hannan (Seattle, WA USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am a highly scheduled and task oriented person. I have recently learned to love process, but my knee jerk is still all about getting things done by or before they need to be done.
As such, I have been a DEVOTED FC user for many years. I love the Outlook plug-in for the fact that you can SEE everything at once (prioritized tasks, calendar, email, folders) And you can sort and change the view the way you like it. I love the ability to prioritize the tasks based on ABC and 123 and I like being able to assign them to a particular project and see what project each task is associated with.
I like using the goals and compass - and find that when I use them, my friends and family don't feel that they always get shoved to the bottom of my priorities.
FC has had a lot of trouble working out the problems with the task/project synchronization with each version. With versions 4 and 5, when you upgrade or load the software to a new computer and then synch with your PDA or PDA phone, it duplicates all the projects and tasks - this is annoying but no where near as troublesome as the glitch with version 6.
I love how version 6 appears - it has some interesting upgrades in look and feel.
BUT, when all of my tasks and projects are erased on the second log in - and I had more than 15 projects some with more than 50 tasks - this is a problem. Even with my backups, I lost a lot of productivity. I have complained to FC with no response. I think that companies shouldn't roll something out until it is fully functional. I am an Outlook Superuser. I am running VISTA with MS Office 2007 on a relatively new desktop - so its not because my software is old or out of date.
I still recommend FC - and the plug in, but I caution anyone who is considering purchasing it to back up, back up, back up again. And verify that you can restore.
Nice plan...poor execution November 21, 2008 D. Gutterud (St. Paul, MN United States) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am completely dependent on Outlook and I use a number of the 7 habits tools as well as a modified Franklin Covey planner format so trying to merge them all together would be very valuable for me.
Unfortunately, Franklin Covey has yet to provide such a solution for me. I tried the outlook add-on a few years ago and while I was impressed with the system it had some short comings - especially as far as the stability of the program itself. I recently stumbled across a link to a trial for the most recent version (5.0) of the Outlook product so I thought I'd give it another try.
In short:
I love how easy it is to scheduling task and setup projects. It's nice to be able to easily code and then drag and drop tasks onto a daily or weekly schedule. Viewing tasks and projects is also nice.
I like being reminded to set and keep goals as well as missions and compass headings. While I'm not fanatical about these things, just seeing them on the tool bar seems to help me keep myself focused on the bigger picture and things are are really important.
I like the general format of the dashboard - it's pretty good at cramming a bunch of information in one screen.
However:
I hate how unstable the software is. It CONSTANTLY crashes my Outlook. In many cases I actually have to restart my computer to get Outlook back up. I had this problem with the last version I bought and the crashes are what made me abandon the program - what waste of $100 that was. I thought the new version may have solved that but I guess not - it is WORSE.
I hate how SLOW this add-on makes Outlook. It really bogs my system down. Business Contact Manager is a little slow to bring up but once your in it it runs pretty well - not PlanPlus. It's painful.
I hate that you can't customize the dashboard.
I hate that it doesn't play well with Business Contact Manager.
I hate the fact that when you set estimate times for tasks that those time estimates don't come with the task when you drag it to your calendar - wouldn't that make sense?
Bottom line - great concept, pretty good tool - absolutely awful software coding. Looks pretty - functions poorly. And it's backed up by very poor customer support.
I have one day left on my trial and I will, regrettably, have to uninstall it today. As much as I like what I cad do with it - I simply can not put up with the crashes.
