I gave ACT 5 stars mainly because the built in features of scheduling, tracking history and building groups are pretty intuitive even to a non-technical person like me. Taking a one day class with an ACT consultant gave me a great kick-start and allowed me to discover some cool add-ons that I would not have found without their help. I did not like the version ACT 2005, but since then I have been very impressed. In fact I recently discovered how to easily integrate Outlook and ACT. That was the one imperfection that upset me in the past, and now I can honestly say that I am pretty pleased.

We just recently upgraded and so far I am loving it. Here's what I use ACT for:
I am a full time project manager for a business consulting firm.
I manage and service upwards of 30 active simultaneously clients/projects at anyone time, (worth over 500k in business) in addition to another 20-30 that are sporadically active, while working and coordinating with a team of 22 people (consultants, vendors, support staff )on these projects and a minimum of 3 point people per project on the client side; there is no way I would be able to perform my work WITHOUT ACT! I have been using it for the last 2 years.
I can attach histories, documents, conversations. I can attach all my correspondance to my point person's record, taking much of the guess work out for my team as to the status of any given project and or client. When I schedule activites, keep notes and details in those activities as it morphs and changes. I have gotten fairly strong in using this application and as a result am able to truly focus on the more important aspects of my role: communication, clarification and focusing on helping my team and client achieve the projects' true objectives, within time and budget parameters.
Excel spreadsheets and outlook are a thing of the past. I live and breathe in ACT! It allows me to really be a great contributor to my company, team and clients.

I've used ACT since 1998 (v 3) and have relied on it for my business since then. I was disappointed in the ACT2005 upgrade (it was very slow)--even though it had a bunch of new features. But we upgraded through 2006, 2007 and now 2008 and see the product is much more stable as well as the performance is as good as ever (just like back in the day!) The new dashboard feature (that you can open right up to) is what makes this version worth upgrading to. It organizes my day/business and helps me to see everything I need at one glance. Our team has 12 people--and we hammer our database everyday (histories, notes, activities, opportunities) and it's been the only way we keep up with and know what we're doing (as a fast growing company). We honestly could not function without it. And we have network users, synchronized remote users and even a couple of ACT for Web users--we've seen only a couple issues come up that we've been able to fix quickly. We evaluated other CRM packages--MS CRM, [...], sugar crm--and ACT was the best value. ACT (with some easy customization) totally gives us everything we need and the price is much much less than the other CRM packages out there. My opinion--it's the best value package out there.

The upgrade was smooth and now there's a new dashboard reporting feature! Still an ACT! fan since 2000 and I'm tired of people slamming the product. I synchronize my remote database, sync it to my Treo, run mail merges, send emails out of ACT, use dynamic groups and opportunities. This is the best product in this price range!

I have recently upgrade to ACT 2008 and am impressed that it is even faster than ACT 2007. As a user of all versions going back to ACT 2000, this is by far the best. I love the new Dashboard feature. It helps me to be able to create a different dashboard for the various tasks/processes I use on a daily basis. I love the ease of creating and using queries. In our firm we send email blasts and postcard blasts to hundreds of clients at a time - and we are able to easilyb target our messages to different audiences. I recently upgraded to Office 2007 - and am glad that ACT integrates nicely. As a business owner, my entire company runs on ACT and Quickbooks. Both products are necessary to my business and provide the reports I need in order to measure and manage my staff. Probably the coolest thing is that my new hires are able to get up and running after a 2 hour introduction!
