3 out of 5 stars Rerated from 3 to 5 star   July 18, 2008

I am changing my last review from 3 star to 5 star.

Mine was a virgin install and it went flawlessly. None of the problems others complained of. I find the program to work fast in my machine but I do have a powerful laptop.

I've tried Maximizer, Goldmine, Salesforce.com and I've found that they've improved Act to the point where it is better than all three for what I want to do. Which is basic CRM management for myself without integration with others.

It's very easy to use I picked it up in less than 8 hours. The feature I love most is the "Groups"
Basically you can create custom field or use your own. Than you have a group feature that allows you to make a search for just about anything and any field and create a group out of the search.
So now I have 5 different types of contacts. All in the same database. And to go directly to the category of contact I just click on the correct group. It is extremely fast and organized. What is also nice is that when creating the field you can make it a requirement that you can't finish entering the contact without filling in that field. So you never forget to categorize the client.

Scheduling is awesome. My Maximizer used to pop up a window for every meeting or appointment. Sage on the other hand when you have multiple apointments they show up on 1 window with each one below the other in a list. AND YOU CAN MASS SNOOZE THEM. Also you can edit the defaults so that every time you fill in a appointment you don't have to change every window.

I highly recommend ACT. If I do see one flaw it is that they purposefully do not have a good export utility so you are stuck with staying with them if you ever decide to leave and need to take the customer notes with you.

I should mention that of the two bugs I found, 1 was solved by common sense and the other was in the Act answerbase.

*****************************************************
I wrote in my last review about two bugs in ACT. I decided to go to ACT for help.
My first problem was with the layout. I did a search in the user base and found the solution. I was able to do this in under 5 minutes. Turned out that I have the fonts at 120% on my computer and that to edit you have to have the fonts at normal. Than later you can raise them back to 120%. Considering the complexity of this program and that most users keep the font size as normal I can't really blame ACT. Expecially since I can still use my computer at its old settings I just have to change it to do the editing.
The second bug was a simple problem of the Email password not being remembered. I couldn't find it in the knowledge base but than I used common sense and went back to email preferences and marked the remember password in the email settings. Problem went away. I do consider this a bug that if you mark the remember email when downloading email it doesn't register and that it has to be in the original settings. But since I could get around it so easily.

1 out of 5 stars To Upgrade, or Not To Upgrade (NOT!)   July 8, 2008

I am currently using ACT 2005, V7. Using is a generous word given all the diffculties documented in this space, which I have experienced. Main source of problems were database migration years ago (finally fixed it) but it is a HUGE memory hog that freezes my computer which has plenty of RAM. Wonder of wonders, I was informed I could participate in a class action suit against Sage becasue of this bootleg software they were selling. I just got my check, $45. Not a lot, but I thought surely Sage has fixed these problems 3 years and 3 versions later, I should spend the $45 to upgrade. Read on, and obviously they have not. If Sage wants to send me a free copy I'll invest the time to try it and report back fairly. I'll even pay for the upgrade if it works as they advertise. But as of right now I am going to buy a case of beer with my $45 and call it a day.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, I agree...Act is back!   June 27, 2008

I owned the older 6.0 version and loved it. I purchased the 8.0 version and HATED it because of the many flaws. I purchased the 10.0 act a month ago and I really am impressed. I was so worried about the transition but it really wasn't a problem at all. It runs smoothly and does a lot more than my old 6.0 version. I am really happy with the product. Make sure your PC has at least 2Gs of RAM and at least 3Gs of processing speed. It'll run great. Hopefully you won't have to talk to Tech support in India. It was a real waste of my time. I found the answer to my problem on my own.

4 out of 5 stars Not as bad as I feared - in fact, pretty good   June 26, 2008

I have been a long time act user, going from dos 2.0 to act 6.0 (and now to act 10). I got a new computer, and needed to upgrade as it came with office 2007. I had read the terrible reviews and was terrified of upgrading. I did the upgrade by following all instructions and knowledge base articles to the letter. I was waiting for the computer to explode or the devil to show up in my office, but everythign went exactly as it should.

The program has worked exactly as it should. There are a few things I dont like, but that is probably more due to me being used to doing things one way for the last 5 years.

For the record, this is a one person install of a private database with no network requirements (ie pulling a shared database off of a server.) In addition, the new computer is very high end (4 gigs ram, 2.5 dual core, etc.)

Hope this helps.

I upgraded from ACT 6. Yes there were problems to overcome and some are ongoing. But not all can be blamed on Sage or ACT. Don't forget MS does not like to play well with others, not to mention my Sony Viao is not recommended by me either as it is the worse computer in our office and I think the worst one I have ever used. I do recommend purchasing the 1 yr warranty highly. The upgrades from ACT 6 are worth it all, and I liked 6 a lot.
