1 out of 5 stars If you have all day ...   November 12, 2008
I sometimes feel I need two computers. One to do work on. The other to entertain itself by downloading Microsoft patches and virus scanning. When I log into my computer, it takes generally 10 to 15 minutes of Norton 360 doing its own virus scanning (which you do not have the power to stop -- you can't even kill the process in the Task Manager). It used to take me under a minute to boot up.

Theoretically, I can still use the computer during this time, but opening a browser is a 6 to 7 minute process. If Norton 360 would give you the option at bootup to do a virus scan or not, the product would be great. Unfortunately, I usually turn on my computer because I want to do something, not because I feel like virus scanning for the next 15 minutes.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY IT!   November 12, 2008

I have been an avid Norton Symantec user for over 13 years. This is the worst product EVER. It slows your system down so much that I had to disable most of the features, which an average user will not know how to do.

My biggest complaint is that once the "virus update" expires.. it renders the entire software useless. I couldn't even go in and make simple changes to the settings, nothing to do with the virus update feature. PLUS A pop-up comes up everyday twice a day begging me to buy another year subscription. That is false. What they are really asking is that I buy the software again. Once a year is up .. you might as well throw it in the trash OR give it to someone else OR wipe your hard drive and install a fresh copy.

I am not happy with it at all! I will never buy any anti-virus or internet security software from this company again. I have heard of complaints that it will crash your system the day it expires.

Uninstalling any Norton products are difficult and you should find a good article on the internet on how to do this. NOTE: You must uninstall any anti-virus software if you are installing a different brand.

I have use norton for years, but they got it right this time! With a touch or a botton my computer is not only virus free spyware free but it speeds up the disks too. It work in the background if you want and you dont have to touch it or you can be proactive with it too.

1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money   November 6, 2008

This product has slowed my computer down to a crawl, and has caused programs to remain in task manager after exiting. (I have a relatively new dual processor machine with 2 gb of RAM.) Furthermore, Norton says that this software can be installed on up to 3 PCs. However, when I try to activate it, I get a message that the second machine where it is loaded has exceeded the number of allowable installations. When I look up my account on the Norton site, it says that I can have the software on up to three machines. To fix this problem, I have to find my proof of purchase, mail in a form and the receipt, and they will get back to me in three weeks after deciding if I have exceeded the installations. What am I supposed to do for virus protection until then? This product is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. I'm switching to McAfee forever.

I have installed and experimented with a significant number of products that are direct competitors of Norton-360. Products of both "Free" and "Fee" variety have been evaluated with the consent and cooperation of my clients. Norton has been used used in environments where the client's ISP (Internet Service Provider) provided and/or recommended an alternative product with similar capabilities. The following observations have been documented: 1. The "free" products can be the most expensive if they prove to be ineffective. 2. Free products of this variety are frequently carriers of spyware or tax the PC significantly due to inferior design. 3. Norton devotes significant resources to developing detection and fixes in a timely manner -- generally better than competitive offerings. 4. The Symantec/Norton web site provides substantially better support with a higher level of quality than competitive offerings. 5. Symantec/Norton offerings can be easily disabled if they pose a problem or conflict; however, renewing support is just as easy -- contrary to the character of other offerings. A free search and fix support is available on a trial basis. 6. Competitive offerings which are available from the client's ISP (Internet Service Provider) have generally proven to be less effective that Norton-360. I have frequently experienced Norton-360 "discovering and trapping" viruses, spam, and spyware when used as a secondary line of defense on a client P/C. I have no financial relationship or special incentive to recommend Norton-360 other than the satisfaction and excellent experience of my customers. Their positive experience enhances their opinion of my efforts. That is enough for me. You will have to make your own judgement. I have already made mine based on 20+ years of professional experience.
