Indie gaming at its best September 14, 2008 Uplink is a very interesting game for many reasons. Few games have engrossed me completely like Uplink does. The game is essentially a Hollywood computer hacking simulator. You start out with little experience, performing simple hack and steal missions. After an hour or so, you can expand to more devious items, like bank hacking, Social Security fraud, and adding, or removing, criminal records. After a while, and once you get accustomed to the environment, the story begins to unfold. Graphically, the game is minimalistic. It utilizes a very basic windowed interface. The install is small, and the game packs quite a few hours of enjoyment. However, please don't purchase Uplink: Hacker Elite. Hacker Elite is the same game, but they do not pay royalties to the developers. Since this is an indie game, the idea is to get the money to those who made it. If you can, either purchase through Steam, or better yet, directly from Introversion Software. They still support all their games, and they deserve to be paid for their work.
Uplink May 13, 2007 Over all a decent game. It lacks replay value once your top hacker. Game play becomes repetitive at times.
Fun, interesting, and somewhat technical. April 18, 2007 This game, while dated is still an excellent choice. For anyone that ever has wanted to be an "elite hacker" or just thought it was cool, you should try it. The game is very easy to learn, there is a short tutorial and then it starts you on the missions. The game shows you some things that are correct with hacking, but the game does take place in the future so there are fictional things as well. In order to progress you need to upgrade your utility programs as well as your computer system. Every time I would get caught hacking, it would make me want to go back and try again. Its simple and addictive. Definately a worthwhile purchase.
Simply Awesome! August 3, 2006 Uplink is one of the best games since the 80s! It may not have state of the art graphics, but perhaps simpler is better. The text adventures of the 80s had one advantage over 99% of any graphic games today, and that is you could use your imagination while playing. Don't get my wrong I love playing state of the art graphics games, but they get boring doing the same thing over and over. Why do you think they are developed to play for 36 hour game play? But games where you use your imagination can be enjoyable long after you toss out most of the games today. I put Uplink in the same fun catgory as Master of Orion (orignal version), which I enjoyed for an entire year the first year it came out, and never really mastered it. With the knowledge game developers have now, it's time to return to the roots of PC games and create games that challenge our minds. I highly recommend Uplink for players who want a challenge.
Never Thought A Hacking Game Would Be That Good! May 9, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This hacker simulation game is simply better than my imagination. You are first hired to do hacking tasks, taken by fairly good tutorial, and then moving on to the real world. you have to go through all kind of password cracking, firewall bypassing, Bouncing Connections, it even has its command line feature. You start gradually and have all the support material included as part of the game itself.
You really get the feeling you are in a hacking mode from the first look at the game cover. Even entering the serial number has never been so much fun where you have to go through a matrix of scrambeled numbers. Sound has a great taste as well... reminds me of the movie "Recruit".
If you are really into hacking, this game is the choice for you.
