Gameplay
An space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the game proceeds. As the game opens a variety of character classes are made available to the player, with talents, both exclusive and general, associated with each. With experience these talents are leveled up, resulting in the unlocking of related abilities and/or entirely new talents. The player has the ability to customize their Commander Shepard in a number of ways including physical appearance, gender, and certain aspects of their personal history, with the rub being that these choices can influence things like available missions, dialogue choices with non-player characters (NPCs), and character background.

Accompanying this main character are a number of preset supporting characters that the player can direct and develop relationships with, which again, will alter the outcome of the story. All the characters from the original game make an appearance in Mass Effect 2, but the immediate characters surrounding Commander Shepard are new. Additional new features that players can expect to experience include new alien races; a more realistic damage system; a new heavy weapons system allowing for maximum damage; a regenerative health system; a dramatic increase in the number of character animations available to Shepard; and updates to the dialogue mechanic used when conversing with NPCs.

Integration with the Original Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2 allows players of the original Mass Effect game to import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. In doing this, the decisions that were made in the first game will affect the events of the second game. In addition, characters from the first game will return, as long as they were not killed off by the player in the first game. On the other hand, new players coming to the series for the first time in Mass Effect 2 will start a brand-new character, discover the events of the previous games as they progress and embark on a thrilling stand-alone adventure that does not require the previous game for play.

Key Features

  • Futuristic Weapons - Choose from 19 different weapons, including devastating heavy weapons that can end a battle in seconds.
  • Elite Specialists - Recruit up to a dozen of the galaxy's most dangerous operatives to help you in your mission. Train and equip your team to survive insurmountable odds.
  • Explore the Galaxy - Scan planets to uncover unique secret missions in the Mass Effect universe.
  • Integration with Original Mass Effect - Players of the first Mass Effect can import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. New players will find a thrilling stand-alone adventure awaits them, a polished and action packed journey that surpasses the first game in nearly every possible way.
  • Intense Third-Person Combat - Increased intensity with precision shooter controls to let you control the action and overcome insurmountable odds.
  • New Damage System - New location based damage system allows for targeting of key weak points, blasting off limbs, igniting enemies, or crippling and disabling enemy troops.

2 out of 5 stars This game would be great if they took out the Steam part   July 4, 2010
William Hiles (Middleburg, VA)
Mass Effect 1 was a very good game. Mass Effect 2 would be a very good game, except for the Steam requirement. I am one of those humans that is fortunate enough to have property out in a rural area where there is no Broadband. I don't mind so much that I needed to make a connection to the internet to activate the game, but what I do find absolutely horrible is that I couldn't play the game until Steam downloaded a patch that was 1Gig in size.

Those of you with Broadband probably find this to be no problem. But for those of us on satellite for internet connectivity, it is over a day to do the download just to start playing the game. I tried every setting I could find in the new version of Steam and couldn't find a way to just play without the patch. I tried driving to a friends house and downloading the patch directly only to find that you can't install the manually downloaded patch on the game if it is activated by Steam.

Oh yea... and there isn't anything on the cover of the game that indicates that Steam is required or that a constant internet connection is required. That's the reason for giving it a bad overall review.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best, immersive shooter-RPG ever   June 16, 2010
David Kreps (D.C.)
I love this game. I would recommend the regular edition over the collector's edition, since I think the bonuses, while nice, are not worth the extra money. However, the game itself is worth EVERY PENNY. It's visually stunning, with stellar voice acting, a weirdly paced but fascinating and unique story, and a huge cast of interesting and detailed playable characters.

The gameplay is more shooter and less RPG, which I'm not a big fan of, but it's still fun and rarely gets old. The realistic-yet-fantastic sci-fi galaxy that the game takes place in is so full of detail and life that you'll almost feel like you're not on Earth any more when you really get into it.

The computer I played it on was a bit old, but still strong enough to use the most detailed textures (a must). However, it crashed a LOT. Fortunately, the game auto-saves very often, so when it crashes you can usually start again only a bit behind where you left off. The game is so amazing that it was easy to forgive the crashes which must have happened at least 20 times or more while I was playing.

I HIGHLY recommend this game, and also the downloadable content for the bonus character Kasumi that you can buy from Bioware. Can't wait for Mass Effect 3!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good game   June 15, 2010
Victor F. Dilorenzo (NJ, USA)
First off, I played through the first game many times, loved it. This game is much different, the completely changed the way weapons and inventory works. There now is no inventory, and you have to use the weapons the game gives you at certain times, no buying better weapons when you make enough bank. And weapons no require ammo, this is major gay.

This sucks at first, but I got over it because the gameplay and story are just as good as the first. I liked how weapons worked in the first game though and wish the game was modable so things could be reverted back.

Some reviewers said this game was well polished, true in every aspect that mattes except the graphics. These textures are from the xbox, and 85% of them look like complete crap, pixelated crap. Its a shame, if bioware knew how to make hi res textures this game would be gorgeous. Don't let that turn you away, this game is awesome. and if you played the first, this is a must play, if you havent played the first, you need to play that because it affects what happens in this game.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed   June 6, 2010
Gvaz The First (USA)
I was so excited for this game when it was announced! I loved the first game and really wanted and hoped this game was gonna be good, but as time went on, and more info was released, I started to worry they went the wrong way with this, and they did.

Good things:
- Combat is fun and improved
- Weapons are interesting. Nuke? Yes please.
- Mako is replaced with a hovercraft, which controls great.
- More customization of your armor, but only a few pieces except for heads, which there are 123786234 of.
- Voice acting is good
- Mordin

Bad things:
- Customizing squad appearance is literally a texture swap. You have to pay more for more textures. AYFKM?
- only like 3 or 4 weapon varieties per "class" of weapons, no modding
- Romance plots are really really lame, and suddenly a whole lot creepier
- No exploring of planets. It is a corridor shooter now. On one hand there was huge vistas, with tiny places on the map that you could actually do stuff on. So they took the opposite extreme and only let you land on one place instead that is a straight line. The result is the universe feels a LOT smaller.
- Mining. Dear god, give me the minigame instead of this garbage.
- No story progression. The story is collecting people and then going through the omega 3 relay. The omega 3 mission takes about 1 hour, maybe 2. Each character recruit takes maybe 30 to 90 minutes, and you're not forced to do their loyalty missions but if you want the good ending you need to do that too.
- Stats are streamlined. This means there's only a few stats that are worthwhile, stats like ammo don't stack over a group.
- Global Cooldowns on abilities. This means if you change your ammo, or you use a biotics or a tech skill, you're not able to do anything else until your ability cools down.
- Vanguard class is gimped, for most people. The charge ability that replaced the shield isn't that good until it's fully skilled, making the vanguard class a glass cannon, instead of an OP jack-of-all-trades tank.
- Minigame for hacking is fun the first time, but not the 2342 time. They are all over the place and they can take a long time, in comparison with the simon says of ME1. They are not hard whatsoever, but later on they become very tedious.

I was looking forward to this so much, but it just let me down. Bring back ME1 with a better mako and me2 combat please!

5 out of 5 stars Sexy, entertaining and filled with adventure   June 4, 2010
Nathan J. Hook (MN)
I'm not going to go too much into all of the storyline stuff, but simply put, Mass Effect 2 is probably one of the most enjoyable games I've played in a long time.

I love the sci-fi genre, and if you enjoy that and the hyper-fiction storyline model, then this game is a must have just for the cinematic experience that it delivers. It took me about 36 hours to complete the first time through and it's massively addictive. The characters are pretty rich in terms of their development and there is a lot to explore, research and develop in the game as you assemble your team.

I did not play the first installment, may purchase the first just for kicks, but the premise of the game is not dissimilar to the Magnificent 7 or Blakes 7, where a rag-tag collection of individuals with specialist skills are brought together to face insurmountable odds. It's a sound idea and with all the bells and whistles of a decent PC graphics platform this game truly rocks.

Like I said there's tons to explore etc, and as you develop and collect your team, Shephard and his team will evolve into a formidable fighting force. One thing I like was being able to build Shephard from the ground up. Additionally, you have the option of being male or female, which adds complexity to the game. The game has plenty of female characters who are kick ass, so to speak. Certainly everyone seems to be beautiful and some incredible voice talent was pulled together to make the episode. It was cool to hear an Australian voice for Miranda adding to the cosmopolitan collection of characters.

Some elements were a bit tedius, collecting resources from planets you can't land on, but it works. Some environments were a bit clunky too, but it was a good comparison to the Star Ward "Knights" series.

The collectors edition has some extra content, but nothing worth making it a must have except for true freakish fans. It was interesting to have some extra stuff, but the game by itself is plenty good.

Definitely if you like this genre, but it. Can't recommend it enough.
