Play begins when you select your hunting persona--there are several guys and one woman to choose from--and dress them in weather-appropriate camouflage. Next, you select your equipment: lures, calls, scents, blinds, and, of course, weapons. Gun in hand, it's out to the target range, to quickly sight in your gun. And don't forget a hunting license either--unless you want the word "POACHED" emblazoned across your trophy!

At last, fully equipped, it's time to go hunting, either for a day or an entire season. Deer Hunter 3 is an ideal pastime for urban hunters who have limited chances to get out into the woods. It is also, for the hunting novice, a well-rounded introduction to the hardware and etiquette of hunting game. For experienced hunters, this game may seem more like comedy than serious simulation, even though it takes itself very seriously--to the point of heckling when you miss a shot.

Deer Hunter 3 incorporates such features as a full virtual hunting season, where gamers can actually scout deer during the preseason, then return for the season opener and hunt through the entire hunting season. Each hunting area is also complete with seasonal changes of the environments, such as leaves falling from the trees, as well as the daily changes of the sun rising and setting. Other extremely realistic environmental effects include fish swimming in lakes and rivers and animals roaming the hunting area. Gamers can also save their hunt at any time and pick up where they left off.

All hunting areas are created from USGS terrain data. The landscapes are accurately depicted in the game, based on their true environments. Accurate sounds and trees, including birds and vegetation indigenous to the areas, also make Deer Hunter 3 as realistic as it can get.
