Great Product August 29, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great product. It will do what it promises. Those that express issues with it have not spent the time to make the adjustments in "Program Control" to permit some of their programs to run. This is not for the user who doesn't want to be bothered with managing their system and feels intimidated making adjustments to their system. There can be problems installing on Vista Operating Systems. This is where doing the intelligent thing of checking with the Iolo website for information of issues and how to solve them will save you a lot of frustration. Pay attention to the alerts the program send you.
I have used this for a couple of years (the updated versions , of course) and cleaned up numerous systems brought to me with serious virus infestations (one with over 200 virus and spyware infections).
The only frustration I have is the program will not provide the full location header in the title bar of viruses or spyware it finds during scans. This would be useful to track down some Trojans that bury themselves in the registry. Having the full location listed I can go to the location and manually remove the offending code to the "Incinerator" (another wonderful function this program will let you set up). The "Incinerator" function permits you to erase programs from your system to the standard used by the US Defense Department level of security (in short: you cannot get the program back).
Again, this is a wonderful Antivirus/AntiSpyware program. You need to take the time to learn how to use it to get the best results of it's numerous features.
You'll need another utility suite to clean up after this utility suite May 2, 2008 Apparently there are a lot of us out there who are fed up with Iolo. A visit to the Los Angeles Better Business Bureau web site reveals that they've given the company an "F". It's hard to say which has been worse; the software's performance or the company's support. I had been using System Mechanic 6 without a problem, and then came System Mechanic 7. Fortunately I did not experience the nightmares reported by other purchasers but it brought both of my PCs down to a crawl and messed up my Trend Micro security software. Iolo has released a barrage of updates in an attempt to fix the software. It seems that when one update comes in, it is usually followed immediately by more updates. One wonders if they have actually tested the patches before they distribute them. Customer support was useless; you submit a problem and get back a totally irrelevant canned email response. Even though it has been less than a year since I purchased the upgrade, Iolo wants me to put down more money for the latest upgrade that promises to fix the previous upgrade. That was the last straw. I went back to Symantec.
Incapable of Vista Defrag on C drive March 22, 2008 Indicates 24 to 26% fragmented. Ran deep defrag three times with restarts and the software essentially changed nothing noticeable.
If you must, use the 30 day trial version to see what you find on your own. I just uninstalled it after two days.
Oveall this package is worthless.
AND, heaven help you if you have XP or VISTA X64. It wont' work at all. Don't even try to load the package.
Now you know why it is being sold in Frys and other stores with a rebate that makes itfree.
Bad news software February 29, 2008 I bought this on the recommendation of a salesperson at Best Buy. When we installed it on a Windows Vista Home Basic laptop, it wiped out everything, Windows, applications, pictures. Tech support was useless and I could not understand them anyway (I speak Iowan.) Bought a new laptop because the puppy had already chewed off three keys. Spent $20 on software, then $600 on new computer and Mozy backup online.
Please don't waste your time on this product February 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have already wasted enough time with this product so I will keep this review brief.
I installed System Mechanic 7 and within a few minutes of installation had all sorts of problems getting programs, games, internet and other things to work properly on my computer. I finally tracked the problem to be the antivirus. I called the company more than 3 times to fix the problem. Every time I called the only words they knew were please reinstall the program. I reinstalled from the disk twice and had one heck of a time trying to remove the program completely. The third time I called I installed from the internet, no luck, and I begged the fourth time for the person to help me instead of telling me to reinstall. I must not have spoken very good english because again the only response was please reinstall the program.
About a month later I received an email saying they had an update for the program. Like a dumb_ _ _ I gave them another shot and reinstalled the program and tried the update. BIG SUPRISE!!!!! NO LUCK.
I wouldn't have given them one star on the rating but that seems to be as low as you can go.
