Product Description McAfee Internet Security 4.0 (Clearance!) . Protect your privacy and secure you computer and your data with McAfee Internet Security. Incorporating McAfee's award-winning technologies, McAfee Internet Security provides one of the most comprehensive sets of privacy and security tools you can buy. McAfee Internet Security destroys viruses, outwits hackers, secures your personal information, privatizes your Web browsing, blocks ads and pop ups, manages your cookies and passwords, locks down your files, folders and drives, filters objectionable content, and puts you in control of the communications in and out of your PC. McAfee Internet Security provides powerful protection for today's Internet users.
Amazon.com Review It's easy to become paranoid about online security, so learn about the problems and protect yourself with software like McAfee Internet Security 4.0. The package includes two key PC protection tools: McAfee VirusScan and a firewall (to let you decide what information leaves and enters your PC). VirusScan will look for and remove viruses, repair or quarantine infections, and automatically download updates for a year; it also protects you against viruses that use your e-mail address book to spread. The firewall hides your computer from hackers while you're online and warns you when programs are sending or receiving data so you can allow the ones that should be connecting--like your Web browser--and block others--like viruses. While the firewall keeps you secure and lets you block or unblock specific IP addresses, configuring options for individual applications are numerous. There's a built-in security check that tells you whether the settings you've picked for the McAfee tools and other applications like Internet Explorer are secure enough, as well as a host of other security tools (some more useful than others). The filtering tools for blocking offensive content when children are surfing are easy for a determined kid to circumvent and you shouldn't let the tools that claim to protect personal information make you careless about what you type in where. Much more useful are the options to block cookies and to keep your PC online while you're doing a long download. You can also encrypt private files and folders with File Guardian to protect them from hackers, or anyone else who uses your PC. McAfee Internet Security has more features than the average Internet user may need, with a friendly interface and plenty of tools to keep you safe online. --Mary Branscombe, Amazon.co.uk

McAfee Internet Security 4 September 25, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this as a replacement for Norton Internet Security-what a mistake. First, if you can get it running, it is far from user friendly. Too many screens, too many redundant features. Secondly on my PC (running WIN 98SE), the upgrade feature refused to work. The installshield refused to run. I had an IM session with cutomer support (a somewaht "creepy" experience), and did what they said, which was to delete the installshield folder on my PC and download a new version from MSFT which I did, and it did not solve the problem. So, I have run out of time to mess with this product anymore and am going back to Norton (which had its own issues) but at least ran well and allowed me to upgrade.
worst product I've ever seen September 3, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
how can this be a product considering competing companies such as norton and zonealarm?
Save yourself the headache... don't install this! June 20, 2002 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought McAfee internet security so that I could combine three programs (zonealarm, windows washer, Norton Anti-Virus) into one - what a mistake! First of all, it glitched during installation on my XP computer. Once installed, it caused major problems with Internet Explorer and Explorer. In fact, until I told the firewall to filter nothing (no protection) I couldn't even log onto the web. Then, it caused my computer to no longer accept keyboard entry in explorer and internet explorer. Finally, I uninstalled the whole thing and problems were solved, although it did leave behind at least one startup file problem. Also, the manual doesn't list any tech support phone, only web support. Once you get to the web (after installing the software!)it only gives you a 900 number for tech support - there is ZERO free support! I really didn't want to give my money to Symantec (Norton), but their anti-virus program works flawlessly. Do yourself a favor and do not buy or install this product.
Save yourself, stick with Norton. June 5, 2002 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
McAfee Virus Protection I rate highly, although not as highly as Norton AntiVirus for the sole reason that it's interface isn't as clean and doesn't always let you know what it's doing. Personal Firewall; a decent product but again pretty "cranky" with setup and configuration. Internet Security piece of it; IN MY OPINION, ONE OF THE WORST PIECES OF SOFWARE EVER WRITTEN. I was working with a client who bought it and was having issues with it; I got all pieces working, upgraded to the latest and greatest Internet Security from McAfee "live update" and then boom... no programs can access the Internet and I cannot find a way to put the "allowable" programs back. I take a look at the Internet Security audit files and it says something that the user chose not to allow the programs. That is incorrect. I thought I simply needed to check the website for some directions. The support area has ALMOST NOTHING, but a really nice way to pay for additional support. I do computer setup and configuartion for a living, but I guarantee I will never use McAfee again. If you're a beginner, don't even bother... I'm still confused and I've been doing this for 20 years. Buyer beware, if you've read all the other reviews and still sitting on the fence, don't do it. I would not use the Internet Security part of it if they paid me.
I don't understand ... May 11, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
... how the company that is #1 in corporate virus/security can make a product which is either: (1) too hard for the average to moderately skilled user to configure properly, or (2) crashes internet access and internet explorer with a combination of rather scary errors. After uninstalling McAfee Internet Security 4.0, all the errors went away. I bought the program based on McAfee's reputation, and wrongly thought the other bad reviews were sour grapes, competitors, or incorrect installs/configurations. I was wrong.
